November 2010 Meeting:
Demonstration of The Writing Pal Software

The Writing Pal is an intelligent tutoring system designed to support the teaching of writing by augmenting face-to-face classrooms and teacher efforts with AI technology.  The W-Pal teaches students writing strategies by implementing vicarious learning methods, offers students multiple opportunities to practice through interactive games, and provides students immediate feedback through linguistic analysis of their writing. Although many tools and systems offer writing help in various ways, this is one of a few, if not the only system in development that attempts to cover a complete teaching, practice, and feedback process.

At November's STC meeting, W-Pal developers will demonstrate segments of the program and describe the key research supporting its design, including usability testing conducted thus far.
